Mumbai, Jan 3 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets closed flat in Thursday's trade. Oil and gas, information technology (IT) and media and entertainment (TECk) stocks gained.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,771.03 points, closed at 19,764.78 points - up by 50.54 points or 0.26 percent from its previous close at 19,714.24 points.
The sober sentiment in the market comes after bullish buying trend at the Indian equities markets took place on Wednesday as the benchmak index surged 133 points after US lawmakers cleared the deal on the "fiscal cliff".
The BSE Sensex Thursday touched an intra-day high of 19,786.30 points and a low of 19,693.29 points. The BSE midcap index was up 55.85 points, while the smallcap index was higher by 69.58 points.
The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange again soared past the psychological resistance level of the 6,000-points mark. Nifty had crossed 6,000 points mark in Wednesday's intra-day trade. On Thursday it closed 16.25 points or 0.27 percent at 6,009.50 points.
In the Sensex sectoral indices, oil and gas index was up 118.35 points. The IT index was up 62.69 points. Technology, media and entertainment (TECk) index up 45.60 points.
However, the capital goods index decreased by 42.74 points. The consumer durables index down 30.44 points and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) index was lower by 29.49 points.
The major Sensex gainers were DrReddys Lab, up 2.35 percent higher at Rs.1,881.05; Bharti Airtel, up 1.99 percent at Rs.327.75; ONGC, up 1.95 percent at Rs.279.75; Reliance Industries (RIL), up 1.51 percent at Rs.860.55; and Infosys, up 1.24 percent at Rs.2,336.30.
There were 16 of the 30 Sensex scrips which closed in the red.
Tata Power, down 1.39 percent at Rs.110.10; Sun Pharma, down 1.09 percent at Rs.732.75; Maruti Suzuki, down 0.95 percent at Rs.1,542.95; Hero MotoCorp, down 0.87 percent at Rs.1,887.60 and HDFC Bank, down 0.74 percent at Rs.682.00 were among the main losers.
Among other Asian markets, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was lower by 0.08 percent. China's Shanghai Composite Index was up 1.61 percent.
Among other Asian markets, Singapore's Straits Times Index was up 0.72 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.37 percent. The Shanghai Composite Index closed higher by 1.61 percent.
The European markets were all in the red. Britain's FTSE 100 was down 0.02 percent while the German DAX was trading lower by 0.28 percent. The French CAC 40 was down 0.52 percent.
