Agitation at excavation site; Delhi police made some arrest

An Agitation was held Saturday night at Delhi Metro Rail Project's site where excavation is going on for extending line of Chandani Chowk to Jama Masjid where a building structure was unearthed and police prohibited the entry at the excavated site.

The localities claimed that it was a 17th century mosque 'Akbarbadi Masjid' so they have tried to build a fresh mosque at that sight but Delhi high court directed to stop the rebuilding and ordered to Delhi Police and New Delhi Municipal Corporation to handed over the site to Archeological survey of India (ASI).

The mob was protesting to prohibit the entry and they began to pelt on policemen that caused injured to 10 policemen.

Police then used force to cordoned off the area. Police have also arrested some people in charge of creating agitation.

"We have arrested a few people in this connection. An inspector and a head constable and eight constables were injured when the angry mob pelted stones at them," Additional Commissioner of Police Devesh Chandra Srivastva said. He did not specify the number.

Police had to even lob tear gas shells to disperse the mob.

According to police officials, the situation is still tense in Subhash Park area.
