Hockey India facilitated 34 gold-winning Olympians in with honors today in a function organized at hotel Lalit in Delhi. The former players to get the honor were the part of gold medal winning team at three successive Olympics from 1948. They were honored with cash awards of Rs 2 lakh apiece.
Hockey India Secretary-General Dr. Narinder Batra introduced the former hockey players one by one who were honoured by the dignitaries present at the occasion that included BJP leader Arun Jaitley, sports minister Ajay Makan, V.K. Malhotra, V. Bhaskharan and others.
The list of 34 former players also include the names like Balbir Singh Sr and Leslie Claudius, who were both part of Indian hockey teams that won gold medals at three successive Olympic Games from 1948.
The members of the present Indian Hockey team were also present at the
occasion including Bharat Chetri, the present Indian hockey team captain and
chief coach Michael Nobbs.
During the occasion Chetri said "the team is really working hard and putting
their best effort for the London Olympics and would not disappoint the hopes of
country".
Coach Michael Nobbs said that he is deeply honored to be a part of Indian Hockey team as a coach. Though, it's a big responsibility but the present Indian hockey team is one of the best teams of world and will definitely do well in the coming Olympics.
"The country has lots of expectations with the present team and we hope that the team will live up to our expectations and will not disappoint the country", said Mr. V.K. Malhotra.
Former hockey veteran Harbinder Singh said "It's a matter of great pleasure and proud privilege to be honored for our earlier achievements for the country and I wish this tradition will continue in future also".
The list of 34 players who were honored today included Balbir Singh Sr., Keshav Dutt, Leslie Claudius, G Nandy Singh, Jaswant Singh, Raghbir Lal, Rs. Bhola, Hardayal Singh, Haripal Kaushik, A.S Bakshi, Gurdev Singh, Charanjit Singh, Gurbux Singh, Harbinder Singh, Dharam Singh, Balbir Singh, Ali Sayeed, Darshan Singh, V Bhaskaran, Bir Bahadur Chettri, Allan Schofield, Sylvanus Dung Dung, Rajinder Singh, Davinder Singh, Gurmail Singh, Ravinder Pal Singh, MM Sommaiya, Maharaj Krishan Kaushik, Charanjit Kumar, Mervyn Fernandis, Amarjit Singh Rana, Mohammed Shahid, Zafar Iqbal and Surinder Singh Sodhi.
However, some of the players could not attend the function due to some reasons.
