NBT signs MOU with Calcutta University to start new course on Book publishing

The National Book Trust, India (NBT) will soon start a Post Graduate Diploma in Book Publishing Studies to promote book publishing in the country. Regarding this concern, NBT, an autonomous body under the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, has singed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Calcutta on Tuesday, 19th June. The MOU was signed by M.A. Sikandar, Director, National Book Trust, India with Prof. Basab Chaudhuri Registrar, Calcutta University. Other dignitaries like Prof. Suranjan Das, Vice Chancellor, Calcutta University and office bearers of Publishers and Booksellers Guild were also present at the occasion.

The first session of the course will begin from the current session with a total number of 25 students under the Centre for studies in Book Publishing, University of Calcutta. The admission procedure for the course will start from August, 2012 by the University.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Suranjan Das expresses his happiness on signing the MOU with NBT and said it is the first time for any University in India that an MOU has been signed between an University and a professional body like NBT for running a professional course on Book publishing. According to the MOU, NBT will help the University to interact the students with publishing professionals on a regular basis. In addition to that, NBT will also be responsible for preparation of study materials and developing infrastuructural facilities for the course.

NBT Director, M.A. Sikandar also expressed his pleasure for the MOU and said this MOU will not be restricted only to the course but will also provide the university to run short term programmes specialized in publishing, seminars, workshops and other things related to book publishing on regular basis.

The course is likely to benefit the publishing industry by providing it adequate professional manpower in future. Moreover, NBT is also planning to introduce special programmes on Management development for the working executives in publishing industry.
