Refusing to contest for the presidential election in the second term, Former President APJ Abdul Kalam today said to senior Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advaani that he is not going to contest for presidential poll. He never aspired for the second term, media sources said.
"I have decided not to contest for the post of President. I thank Mamata Banerjee for her faith in me," said missile man APJ Abdul Kalam to BJP leader by adding, "My conscience is not permitting me to contest."
In a mini statement he said, "My dear friends, you are aware of the developments in the run up to the Presidential election. Though I have never aspired to serve another term or shown interest in contesting the election, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and other political parties wanted me to be their candidate........Many, many citizens have also expressed the same wish. It only reflects their love and affection for me and the aspiration of the people. I am really overwhelmed by this support. This being their wish, I respect it. I want to thank them for the trust they have in me."
The clarification of Kalam has ended all the speculation about his contestant, which was promoted by Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee.
Now, BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has two option left: one to support BJD promoted PA Sangma or to support UPA promoted Pranab Mukherjee.
Moreover, TMC has also left two options now, either to support one of the nominated candidates or to skip the election.
Earlier, BJP tried hard to convince Kalam to contest prez election as Advani's close aide Sudheendra Kulkarni went to him twice a day today but failed to win over.
