Global Warming Alarm: Ice covered Arctic goes Green

New Delhi, Wed, 13 Jun 2012 NI Wire

A steep rise in temperature is not only making the ice in the Arctic melt but it is also making it greener day by day. Arctic that has always been covered with ice is now seeing significant increase in evergreen shrubs.

Biologists team of University of Gothenburg carried on the research that has found that plants in the Arctic region are growing greener and taller due to warming in the Arctic region.

Warming has caused severe local changes in vegetation with grasses expanding primarily in the coldest of areas.

Many researchers from around the world have been working on the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX). They have gathered a data of almost 30 years.

Recent research of University of Gothenburg was headed by Robert Bjork. He said,"We've managed to link the vegetation changes observed at the different sites to the degree of local warming".

Further adding he said comparisons show that the prevalence of vascular species, such as shrubs and plants, is increasing as temperatures rise. The degree of change depends on climate zone, soil moisture and the presence of permafrost.
