Eggs in breakfast keep you free of hunger until lunch

A recent study led by an Indian-origin researcher identifies egg as "'nature's appetite suppressant" as it make us feel fuller for longer as compared to other forms of breakfast.

Former studies have also admitted the humble egg’s ability to make us feel less hungry at lunchtime.

The study was conducted on 20 healthy people who consumed breakfast of two eggs that had been scrambled or a bowl of cereal every day for a week. After that they opted for other options.

The European Congress on Obesity says that the meals were similar in size and calorific value. These food items also had the same amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat.

In the run up to lunch, the volunteers were questioned how hungry they felt.

After that, they were allowed to eat in a buffet and the amount they consumed was monitored. At last blood tests were done.

The results showed that the people felt fuller after the egg breakfast. This led to them eating less from the buffet.

The examination of blood showed distinct differences in levels of appetite hormones.

Levels of ghrelin, which is linked with feelings of hunger, were lower in the egg-eaters and amounts of PYY, a hormone that helps make us feel full were found in large amounts.

Egg's satiating effects are primarily linked to the high level of protein it contains.

In this study, the cereal possessed the same amount of protein as the scrambled eggs, so the Louisiana State University researchers concluded that the quality of the protein is important.

Here it is important to mention that Protein differs in nutritional quality, and animal protein is generally higher in vegetable protein and that found in eggs the best of all, Nikhil Dhurandhar says.

Dhurandhar, who has treated more than 10,000 obesity patients, said this research makes it clear that losing weight is not as simple as telling people to eat less and exercise more.

He said that appetite reducer can help bolster willpower. Drug side-effects means that a food that curbs appetite could be the solution.

He suggested would-be dieters to begin the day with an egg or two.

"They will feel full and that will help them stick to their diet and get better weight loss,” Daily Mail quoted the researcher as saying.

"Eggs don't have magic powers of cutting weight but they may just help you say "no"," he said.
