The World Health Organisation (WHO) has removed India’s name from the list of polio-endemic countries.

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad made announcement of this effect on Saturday at the Polio Summit 2012, which is being organized in New Delhi.

Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh was also present when this announcement was being made.

"WHO has taken India's name off the list of polio endemic countries in view of the remarkable progress that we have made during the past one year." the letter received by Mr. Azad says.<

As per WHO there were only four countries in the WHO endemic list, including Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan.

If India remains polio free for the next two years. It will achieve the polio-free status.
