Dharmendra, He-Man or the Action King of India is celebrating his 77th birthday today. On this auspicious day here is the look back at his glorious life that started in the black and white era and still continues.
Before Dharmendra became an action king he actually started his career acting in several Romantic films.
Born on 8 December 1935 in Punjab, he came to Mumbai after winning the Filmfare new talent award in search of work and started acting in films.
Soorat aur Seerat in 1962, Bandini in 1962, Ayee Milan Ki Bela in 1964 and then came one of the biggest hits of his life Phool aur Pathar in the year 1966. Dharmendra even received the Filmfare award for it.
Soon he started acting with all the leading ladies of Bollywood like Nutan, Mala Sinha, Saira Banu, Meena Kumari and many others.
Till the year 1974 all his films were romantic and with his look and physique he earned a lot of crazy female fans. He had the manly and muscular feel that DevAnand and Dilip Kumar lacked.
Year was 1971, in came Mera Gaon Mera Desh starring Dharmendra, Asha Parekh and Vinod Khanna. It broke all the records and changed Dharmendra image towards the action genre.
Then followed was a hit streak pairing with actresses like Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz and specially Hema Malini. Jeevan Mrityu, Guddi, Seeta aur Geeta, Yaadon Ki Baarat, Jugnu, Blackmail, Loafer, Jwar Bhata and many others.
Dharmendra was the perfect mix of looks, body, charm, expression and acting in 70s.
Dharmendra gave the biggest hits with Hema Malini who later became his second wife. Dharmendra has two son Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol from his first wife and two daughters Esha Deol and Aahana Deol with Hema.
Dharmendra has acted in more than 247 Hindi-language films.
In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema. In 2007 he received Lifetime Achievement Award at IIFA Awards. In 2012, he received Padma Bhushan by Government of India.
