New Delhi, Dec. 29 (ANI): The Delhi Police hopes to file charge sheet in the gang rape case by January 3, 2013, and appealed to the people on Saturday to maintain calm and peace following the public anger over the death of a 23-year-old victim in a hospital in Singapore.
While mourning the death of the victim, Dharmendra Kumar, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), said the police are equally sad over the victim's demise.
"I appeal to the people to stay calm and maintain peace. Our sympathy goes to her family. We, Delhi Police are equally sad over the victim's demise," said Kumar.
"Following the demise, the autopsy is being conducted. The report will be made available to us very soon. We hope to file the chargesheet under Section of 302 (Murder) by January 3. A special public prosecutor has been appointed for the case. We will ensure the harshest punishment to the culprits," he added.
Earlier, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar urged the people of the city to maintain calm, as his office announced that the area around India Gate and Raisina Hill would be sealed off.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also appealed for calm and pledged that solid steps will be taken very soon to protect women in the national capital.
Meanwhile, defying all the security arrangements and barricading, thousands of protestors have gathered at Jantar Mantar to mourn the victim's demise and protest peacefully against the gruesome crime. (ANI)
