Congress 128th Foundation Day, a moment of pride: Dwivedi

New Delhi/Mumbai , Fri, 28 Dec 2012 ANI

New Delhi/Mumbai, Dec.28 (ANI): Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi on Friday described the celebrations of the party's 128th Foundation Day on Friday as a moment of pride for all leaders and activists.

Dwivedi said: "This is a pride of the Congress workers and leaders that Indian National Congress has completed 127 years. Today, is the foundation day and I feel that it would be unfair that the activities of such a historic and big organisation are being associated with the elections."

"The achievements of the Congress party are registered in the history of this country. The history of the Congress party is a reflection of continuous struggle. The past and the present of the Congress party are indicative of the developments that have taken place in the past and present," added Dwivedi.

A series of functions and welfare programmes were also organised in Mumbai to mark the occasion and senior Congress leaders took out a procession.

The Indian National Congress was founded on this day in 1885 and had ruled for most of India's 65 years of independence from Britain.

For decades after Jawaharlal Nehru, Rahul's great-grandfather, delivered his stirring "tryst with destiny" speech on the eve of independence from Britain 65 years ago, the Gandhi family has dominated politics in the world's biggest democracy.

The succession of prime ministers and Congress party leaders from the family echoed the right to rule of an English monarchy. And the assassinations of Nehru's daughter Indira when she was prime minister in 1984 and grandson Rajiv as he campaigned for elections in 1991 brought an air of tragic glamour akin to that of America's Kennedy clan.
