New Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS) A 22-year-old man booked for rioting here could be confined to police custody if he does not pay Rs.10,000 for bail.
Nafees Ahmad, booked along with eight others for violence near India Gate Sunday, has pleaded innocence and said he cannot afford to pay the bail amount.
"I don't have the money," Ahmad, a motor mechanic, told IANS.
He said police arrested him while he was going to join the protest.
"They stopped me when I reached India Gate Sunday afternoon and forcibly took me into their vehicle and brought me to Tilak Marg police station," said Ahmad.
He was released Monday morning along with others on a personal bond from the court and asked to report Wednesday with the surety bond money.
Ahmed, however, has failed to get the sum and the court has now given him two more days. He will be sent to police custody if he fails to arrange the bail money.
Ahmed came to Delhi in 2008 from Sultanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. He lives in Inderpuri and works at an auto repair shop in Rajouri Garden in west Delhi.
"I have not told my parents about my arrest. I asked some friends for the money but none of them have so much," Ahmed said.
Protests against the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman by six males Dec 16 turned violent Saturday and Sunday.
