West Midnapore (West Bengal), Dec. 25 (ANI): In order to provide access to potable water and employment to the locals, authorities have undertaken a tube-well construction project in the Maoist-infested West Midnapore district of West Bengal.
Authorities in the district have launched a series of intensive development schemes to counter the penetration of Maoists in rural pockets.
The Public Health Department in the Maoist-hub of Lalgarh village of the district is constructing about eight deep tube-wells, which will benefit about 96 villages.
Amalendu Mishra, an engineer at the site said that the project has provided employment to more than 100 people.
"At present, more than 100 people have been working with the project, and when the project will be full-fledged functional, it will employ more people from local (areas) as well as other departments. They (locals) are supporting us in all aspects," said MIshra.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are also participating on a large scale to start projects in Maoist-affected villages such as of Chaipur, Kundabani and Dhojidhara.
Tapas Bera, a local working at the site said that the potable water project comes as a ray of hope for the locals.
"Officials of the Public Health Department came here and selected land. The locals assisted them by providing their land. Work has already started for the project and 96 villages will be benefited by it as they all will have access to safe drinking water through pipelines. Locals are happy about the project," said Bera.
According to official estimate the project will cost Rs 2200 million. (ANI)
