New Delhi, Dec. 24 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee rejected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demand to convene an emergency Parliament Session and an all-party meet in the wake of countrywide protests against the Delhi gang rape incident.
A delegation of the BJP leaders including senior leader L K Advani, Venkaiah Naidu and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj called on the President and raised their demand amid increasing crimes against women.
"Since the government has refused to call a special session of Parliament to pass stringent laws to punish those committing crimes against women and also to hold an all-party meeting, we sought time from President Pranab Mukherjee, but he also rejected our both demands," said Swaraj outside Rashtrapati Bhawan, after the meeting.
Earlier today, the BJP held a meeting of its Core Group and general secretaries here to discuss the 'government's attitude' in the wake of the gang-rape of a 23-year old woman in Delhi and the huge protests which have followed the incident.
The BJP leaders said that while her party had raised the issues of growing atrocities against women in Parliament recently, there was no response from the government. (ANI)
