Amid mounting pressure over the government regarding quick justice to a 23-year old Delhi gang rape victim and other rape cases victims, the government is seeking the way of doing it. In this regard, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde Monday met to Delhi High Court Chief Justice, Justice Darmar Murugesan, to discuss modalities for fast tracking the gang-rape case.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was also present in the meeting with the Chief Justice.
According to reports, it was decided in the meeting that the trial in the Delhi gang-rape case would begin from January 3 and that a daily hearing would be held in court for rape cases against comment.
Shinde, who has called a meeting with the State Director Generals of Police (DGPs) and Chief Secretaries on January 4 to discuss the women security situation across the country will also be meeting Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna to discuss the security situation in the national capital.
Shinde, who has been forced on the back-foot following unprecedented public fury over the brutal-gang-rape of a 23-year- old girl and the police action on the protestors gathered at the India Gate yesterday, earlier today appealed to all citizens to maintain peace.
Earlier, Sheila Dikshit met to Shinde on Sunday and demanded a strict and immediate action against the officers and personnel responsible for dereliction of duty in connection with the rape incident.
Dikshit urged the Home Minister to ensure rationalisation of police deployment, including for VIP security, and setting up a separate authority to look into complaints against personnel.
"VIPs should not be made an excuse for ordinary citizens to feel insecure," she Dikshit told mediapersons after the meeting.
Dikshit, who was accompanied by her Cabinet colleagues, also urged the Home Minister to ensure that policemen are deployed on public transport for ensuring safety of women.
Meanwhile, the protestors have gathered at the Jantar Mantar here after the lockdown at India Gate.
Prohibitory orders that were imposed under Section 144 yesterday remains. The media personnel have been asked to vacate the India Gate here, where the situation had become tensed last evening with the police using water cannons to disperse the angry protestors.
The condition of the 23-year-old girl, who was gang-raped on a moving bus, continues to be critical.
