Puri (Odisha), Dec. 23 (ANI): Famed sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik and 30 students of his sand art institute have made over 500 sand sculptures of Santa Claus with a message to protect the environment. They are also attempting to establish a record to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.
Tourists thronged Puri Beach to see the sculptures made with five tons of sand, a large likeness of Jesus Christ adorning the centre with the message 'Go Green, Save Earth'.
Pattnaik said the project is a follow-up to an earlier record attempt, and added that it would delight tourists in the run-up to Christmas.
"In 2009, we had made 100 Santa Claus sculptures and found our way into the Limca Book of Records. This time, 30 students from my institute have worked over the past four days to make more than 500 sculptures. We have used around five tons of sand. This will be viewed especially by the tourists who come to the beach," said Pattnaik.
As hundreds of sculptures of Santa Claus, sat, stood and reclined on the beach, tourists watching them were enthralled at the scale of the installation.
"We saw it being started about a week ago, and it was just sand, and what he (Pattnaik) has just made of it is very impressive. We have not seen anything like it. We were lucky to be in Puri to see this today," said Neil Collins, a British tourist.
A participant in over 50 international sand art events, Pattnaik is known for commemorating important political and cultural events with his sculptures.
He also uses the medium to spread awareness on social and environmental problems. (ANI)
