Philander suffers injury scare ahead of New Year's Test against Kiwis

Johannesburg , Sat, 22 Dec 2012 ANI

Johannesburg, Dec 22 (ANI): South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander suffered an injury scare after a flare up of his left hamstring during the Sunfoil Series match between Cobras and Titans, and he is in doubt to play the first Test match against touring New Zealand team, starting January 2.

Preliminary estimates were a recovery time of 7-10 days, but that has been extended to up to two weeks following the results of scans, Sport24 reports.

South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee claimed MRI scans revealed that Philander suffered a Grade 1 strain to his left hamstring and injuries of this type usually have a 10 to 14 day recovery period.

Moosaajee added that they will measure the injury as the week progresses, and this will help determine whether his availability for the Test series will be affected.

The first Test starts in 12 days' time, on January 2, so it is a tense time scale for Philander. (ANI)
