Google tells UK lawmakers 'firm not bogeyman of Internet'

London, Wed, 19 Dec 2012 ANI

London, Dec 19 (ANI): After being accused of conducting 'immoral tax practices' in Britain, Google's UK policy chief said that the firm is not "the bogeyman" of the web.

The US-based firm has been lambasted in recent months after it emerged that it paid just six million pounds corporation tax in Britain last year, despite making 4.1 billion dollars in revenues in the country, and avoided 2 billion dollars tax worldwide.

Sarah Hunter, who was Tony Blair's senior policy adviser before she joined the web search giant, insist that Google has been unfairly maligned, the Telegraph reports.

"I genuinely think we make a substantive contribution...We obey by all the laws in the country and other countries we operate in," she said during a meeting with the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on Tuesday.

"It's not the case that we're the bogeyman [of the internet]. On the one hand we are seen as disruptive. On the other hand we are making [other companies] money," she added. (ANI)
