New Delhi, Dec. 19 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and various women rights organisations took to streets here on Wednesday, demanding stringent action against the perpetrators of sexual offences, following the rape of a 23-year old girl in a city bus that sparked outrage and shock in the country.
BJP workers gathered at Jantar Mantar here to raise the issue of safety of women in the national capital and the government to ensure that stringent action is taken against the perpetrators.
"I request Sonia Gandhi to command and ensure action, instead of demanding action," said BJP leader Smriti Irani.
Meanwhile, members of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) assembled outside the Delhi police headquarters and blamed the police and court for inaction regarding the safety of women.
Protesters blocked the road leading to police headquarters and shouted anti-government and anti-police slogans.
"Atrocities are being carried out on women, though I have grown old but still I am not sure whether I will be safe on the streets or not. So, we are attacking on three levels- on the society, who does not treat women as equals; secondly the police, who have failed in their duty and third the courts which have not taken fast track action and instead of implementing the laws properly, the accused are left out on bail," said Jyotsna Chatterjee, an AIDWA member.
Simultaneously, a four-member delegation of Indian Women's Press Corps met Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and submitted a letter in this regard.
The President of Indian Women's Press Corps, T.K. Rajalakshmi said the chief minister has assured them that steps would be taken to ensure the safety of women.
"On behalf of the Indian Women Press Corps, a team of four delegates met the chief minister to discuss the matter, as we are very angry and concerned about the safety of women. We told her that this is not an isolated incident and there has been surge in such types of crimes, which are affecting every class of Delhi. So, we demanded that some stringent action must be taken," said Rajalakshmi.
The police have arrested a bus driver and four other accused in connection with the gang rape case and one of them has admitted to crime. (ANI)
