New York, Dec. 19 (ANI): A 115-year-old man from Kyotango, near Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto, has become the oldest person alive.

Jiroemon Kimura inherited the title from an Italian American woman Dina Manfredini from Iowa, who died on Monday - less than two weeks after she inherited the title, the New York Daily News reported.

Yasushi Nakayama, the mayor of Kyotango, confirmed Kimura's status on Tuesday, calling him "the pride of our town."

Kimura, born on April 19, 1897, is 15 days younger than his predecessor Manfredini.

Kimura, a former postal employee, has 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. He lives with his son's family. (ANI)
