New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports over a woman's gang-rape in a bus here, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notice to the union home secretary and Delhi Police commissioner, a statement said Tuesday.
Terming the incident as "grave violation of human rights", the commission in its notice raised the issue of "declining public confidence in the law and order machinery".
It also talked about "ensuring the safety of women as a number of such incidents have been reported in the national capital in the recent past".
"The two respondents have been asked to submit a report within two weeks," said the statement.
The brutal rape and torture occurred Sunday night when the girl and her friend boarded a private bus at Munirka in south Delhi to go to Dwarka in west Delhi after watching a movie.
The woman was beaten up and raped by around six men inside the bus before being dumped on road. Four accused have been arrested and two others are absconding.
