New Delhi, Dec.18 (ANI): Delhi Police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have revealed that Sunday night's rape of a 23-year-old para-medical student in a bus, was perpetrated to teach the woman and her male friend a lesson.
The investigators have been quoted further by media reports, as saying that the girl was horrifically tortured and raped because she and her boyfriend offered resistance to the assaulters.
So deep is the across-the-board anger over the incident, that a majority have called on the government to give the assaulters capital punishment. Latest television reports said today that the raped woman's medical condition has deteriorated after being taken partially off ventilator support for a short while.
Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had earlier informed the Lok Sabha that the guilty will be punished at the earliest and that he will personally follow the progress in the case.
Shinde also said that efforts would be made to ensure that the guilty are tried in a fast-track court.
Terming the shocking case of gang-rape of a 23-year-old para-medical student in Delhi most reprehensible incident, Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar said on Tuesday that four culprits have been arrested, while two others are on the run.
Kumar said the Delhi Police will request the court to put the case through a fast-track court so as to ensure that the guilty are punished at the earliest. The accused would also be booked for attempt to murder, the police later added.
The four arrested for the crime are: Bus driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma a gym instructor, Pawan Gupta - a fruit seller. Two others are absconding and will be nabbed soon, the police commissioner said.
The girl, along with a male friend, had boarded a chartered bus with tinted glass windows from Munirka in South Delhi around 9.45 PM to go to Dwaraka after watching a movie. As soon as the bus started to move, the group of men present inside the bus assaulted them with an iron rod.
The woman was beaten up and raped by the men inside the bus. There were seven men in the bus. Both the woman and her male friend, who was also beaten up when he resisted, were thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur.
The Delhi Police chief said that the bus was washed after the crime to eliminate evidence. Most of the accused are residents of the slum in Sector three, RK Puram.
Later main accused Ram Singh was produced in court where he refused to undergo an identification test. The court sent him to five-day police custody. (ANI)
