New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) The Congress Tuesday said it was deeply disturbed over the torture and gang-rape of a young woman in Delhi Sunday night and said the incident should not remain a mere statistic.

"We are deeply disturbed by the brutality of the incident. It should not remain a mere statistic," Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury told reporters here.

She said fast track courts should be set up to punish rapists and ensure justice to the victims quickly.

She added that society must censure individuals who commit such crimes.

"We need to have integrated social pressure on rapists. They should not be invited to any social functions even after they come out of jail," she said.

Chowdhury, along with other women members of the Rajya Sabha, will meet Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar and Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Wednesday to discuss what urgent steps need to be taken to ensure speedy trial and punishment of rapists and to prevent such incidents.
