New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Tuesday expressed its concern over the gang-rape of a para-medical student, who is battling for life, with the judges saying that the incident "troubles us also".

The court's remark came after a group of women lawyers mentioned before the court that some action needed to be taken and a fast track court should be set up to deal with the incident that happened Sunday night.

A division bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Vipin Sanghi said: "It was a brazen attempt by some persons who think they can play with the law and order. We are very disturbed. We are aware of the matter, give us a day and we will look into it."

"We have already discussed what has to be done. It troubles us all. Whatever is required to be done, we would do. Wait for a day or so," the bench said.

The brutal rape and torture occurred when the 23-year-old woman along with her male friend boarded a private bus at Munirka in south Delhi to go to Dwarka in west Delhi after watching a movie.

The Delhi High Court Bar Association's women members asked the court to monitor the matter through a fast track court.

Seeking suo moto cognizance in the matter, the lawyers represented by advocate Monica Arora, former Delhi University Students Union president, urged the court to issue guidelines to ensure safety of women in public places.

The court, however, did not take sou moto cognizance but assured that it would take some action and gave the liberty to the lawyers to file a public interest litigation in the matter.

Arora said: "This incident shamed entire Delhi. We are greatly hurt by the statements made by the (state) government that law and order is not their responsibility."

Around five to seven bus employees, already present in the bus, started misbehaving with the girl in the moving vehicle. When the girl's friend resisted, he was beaten up and the girl sexually assaulted as the bus driver drove around for 45 minutes.

The girl and her boyfriend were then thrown out of the bus under Mahipalpur flyover in south Delhi, near the domestic airport.

The girl's condition has deteriorated and she is on ventilator with grave injuries to her stomach and intestines, according to doctors.
