Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 17 (IANS) The Kerala government has no plans to impose prohibition in the state, which earned Rs.10,394 crore through taxes from liquor sales, the state assembly was informed Monday.
State Excise Minister K. Babu informed the assembly in a written reply that the state government has no plans at all to introduce prohibition.
"We are, however, aware that alcoholism causes lots of problems and is a grave issue," said Babu.
He also informed the house that since the Oommen Chandy-led government assumed office in May 2011, till November the state government has earned Rs.10,394 crore through taxes from liquor, which is sold through 708 bars and 383 state-owned retail outlets.
A recent study conducted by a doctor at a leading hospital in the state pointed out that alcohol-related problems have increased and people in the age group of 37 to 45 years are likely to be affected the most.
