Pet lovers in Australia 'ditching larger dogs for smaller breeds'

Melbourne , Sun, 16 Dec 2012 ANI

Melbourne, Dec. 16 (ANI): People have started to prefer smaller dogs over larger breeds - thanks to apartment living and better security systems.

The latest figures from the Australian National Kennel Council showed that Staffordshire bull terrier registrations skyrocketed to 4483 in the past 15 years, making the dogs Australia's most popular breed, News.com.au reported.

Medium-sized breeds like French bulldogs and pugs also rated highly, while old favourites like german shepherds, dobermans and rottweilers were gradually on the decline.

Dogs NSW spokesman Peter Higgins said pet trends had moved towards medium-sized dogs due to apartment living and the fact that people were starting families later.

"The dog becomes a sort of child substitute," he said.

"The dogs that are popular usually have child-like attributes about them," he added.

Breeders are being inundated with requests for the "frenchies", the small french bulldog so in demand, waiting lists span up to two years.

Some prospective owners are so desperate, they're making inquiries to import the dog from overseas, despite the cost and difficulty of importing the pups.

Liz Davidson, secretary of the French Bulldog Club of NSW and a breeder herself, said she could not meet the overwhelming demand. (ANI)
