Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), Dec 16 (ANI): Jalpaiguri in West Bengal hosted a night of cultural festivities on Saturday and invited talents from SAARC countries like Bangladesh and Maldives to strengthen cultural cooperation between all the members of the South Asian region.
Many poets, singers, classical dancers from India, Bangladesh, and Maldives participated in the programme, which attracted the people of Jalpaiguri and the adjacent areas.
"We have organized this as the first cultural programme of Jalpaiguri branch. Three countries are participating, India, Bangladesh and Maldives," said Saroj Kumar Choudhury, organizer of the event.
"We are going to tie up relations between these seven countries in the field of culture and to build a good relation among them. They are also helping us in this field and they have promised to come here for any kind of cultural function," added Choudhury.
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was created in 1985 in Dhaka with seven members, as an expression of the region's collective decision to evolve a regional cooperative framework.
With Afghanistan joining the association in 2007, there are now eight member countries in SAARC namely Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
It also has nine observers, namely China, EU, Iran, Republic of Korea, Australia, Japan, Mauritius, Myanmar and USA. (ANI)
