Sonitpur, Dec 16 (ANI): A top Maoist leader from Jharkhand, Anand Kharwar alias Anandji, was arrested by Assam Police recently from a lodge in North Assam's Tezpur town where he had been staying after arriving from Kolkata.
"There was an intelligence input that two persons of doubtful credentials had put up in the hotel. We detained them and when they revealed they were from Jharkhand, we contacted the police there and communicated the details, including his photograph. Jharkhand Police confirmed his identity," said P K Nath, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sonitpur).
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had earlier said: "Maoists are trying their best to establish their stronghold in Assam. We are aware of it and definitely we will take appropriate steps so that Maoist cannot extend their influence in Assam."
Earlier this year, four Maoists were killed in an encounter in Assam's Tinsukhia District.
Experts believe security forces must decisively act against the Maoists in the Northeast.
"If the Maoists establish the base here then it will be one more headache for security forces and besides one cannot say with total confidence today but down the line with the amount of money they are extorting from across the country, well may be, they will go abroad and procure weapons, which is what will come through these various insurgents group in the northeast and they are smuggling for them and give it to them," said P V Ramana, an expert.
The government is aware that the growth of Maoists in the region can create problems and it is not sparing any effort to check the menace. (ANI)
