Dharamsala, Dec. 16 (ANI): Exiled Tibetans and Buddhist monks assembled in Dharamsala on Saturday for a prayer meet for all self-immolators who have sacrificed their lives to protest against China's oppression Tibet.
As the number of self-immolations in restive Tibetan regions rises sharply, Beijing appears to be tightening rules against the anti-China protestors despite the hopes that the new leadership may take a softer line against Tibet.
According to the Tibet-government-in-exile, about 95 protestors have set their selves at fire and 77 among them have died since 2009.
"These are the Tibetans, residents as well as tourists from other parts of the country, have today gathered here to perform a prayer for the martyrs of Tibetans in Tibet. Just recently three Tibetans have self-immolated, so now it has reached to 95. We are performing prayer to show our solidarity and also console the grieving families," said Nawang Cheodak, secretary, department of religion and culture for the Tibetan government in-exile.
Recently, the United Nation's human rights officials called on China to allow independent human rights monitors to visit Tibet and address deep-rooted frustrations.
China has barred foreign journalists from Tibet and prevented many others from travelling to surrounding Tibetan regions, making independent verification difficult. (ANI)
