BJP is not serious on power issue except organizing demonstration:Yusuf

Delhi Power Minister Haroon Yusuf stated that BJP is all out to mislead people of Delhi by making hue and cry over water and power issues whereas it has never been interested in joining discussion on these issues in the Assembly. Yusuf while replying to a debate on short notice discussion on water, power and LPG moved by Mukesh Sharma and Dr. Narendra Nath, stated that the days of inverters, DG sets and power riots are now part of the history as people are getting quality power 24X7.

Yusuf added that the city government has ensured that anticipated power demand of 6250 MW would be met successfully during summer season. He warned the DISCOMs to avoid harassing consumers on the pretext of alleged tampering in meters and afterward dispatching hefty bills. He also stated that the leaders who vowed to fight corruption have adopted a political route, are today creating an anarchy like situation. Even, BJP is not serious on the power issue it is more interested in organizing demonstration and protests.

Yusuf added that DERC has prerogative to decide power tariff. Delhi has been liberal as far as power tariff is concerned. We have brought substantial deduction in AT&C losses. On waterfront, Sh. Yusuf stated that the city government is striving hard to ensure equitable distribution. It has increased generation from 410 MGD to 875 MGD during last 13 years.

Yusuf stated that the city government has announced three more subsidized cylinders for BPL families covered under Delhi Kerosene-free scheme. It had also given substantial relief of Rs.50/- per cylinder across the board in the past.

Initiating debate Mukesh Sharma stated that 99.1% in Delhi are having electricity connection. The government has dispensed with development charges on electric connection. The per capita consumption of power is 1450 against national figure of 775. During 1993-98 incidents of 1500 power riots were recorded whereas during last 14 years there is no such case. The power demand has raised from 2879 MW to 5700 MW. The city government used to face loss of around Rs.1500 cr. per year prior to privatization. A large number of transmission stations have been commissioned.
