SP accuses government of forcibly evicting members from Rajya Sabha

New Delhi,Politics, Thu, 13 Dec 2012 IANS

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Soon after staging a walkout from the Rajya Sabha, the Samajwadi Party (SP) Thursday accused the government of forcibly evicting two of its members and slammed other parties for not supporting them.

"This is totally unconstitutional. The chair took the name of our members under a rule after which if we had not left (the house), the marshals would have been called," SP leader Ram Gopal Yadav said.

The SP members were protesting against a bill seeking reservations for Dalits and tribals in job promotions.

Yadav said it was at the behest of the parliamentary affairs minister that they were asked to get out of the upper house of parliament.

"First they called the names of two (SP) members and then the minister asked the chair to name all the members. So, we had to leave the house," Yadav said.

Another SP leader, Munawwar Saleem, said: "This bill will never bring social justice but increase social friction. It is BSP's (Bahujan Samaj Party) bill and the Congress is helping them to get it passed."

However, the party said it would not withdraw its support to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government over the issue.
