Snowfall enhances demand of traditional fire pots in Kashmir valley

Srinagar , Thu, 13 Dec 2012 ANI

Srinagar, Dec. 13 (ANI): With winter knocking early at the doors of homes as snowfall started in Jammu and Kashmir, traditional fire pots are in huge demand in local markets, especially those located in the Kashmir Valley.

Huge stocks of traditional Kashmiri fire pots locally called as 'Kangri' are piled up in markets and in the city's bustling streets these days.

Kangris are small earthenware bowls encased in a wicker basket, which are filled with embers and carried by locals under their flowing woollen gowns called 'pherans' to beat the chill.

Bilal Ahmad, a Kangri seller, expressed happiness over the increasing demand with the plummeting temperatures.

"It is convenient to carry Kangri anywhere as it is getting chilly. Heaters are harmful but there is no harm using these Kangris. It is also part of our culture. Right now, there is huge demand and with the dip in the temperatures the demand will increase further," said Ahmad.

Khurshid Ahmad, a customer, highlighted the importance of Kangri.

"It is very essential for two to three months. It is an old tradition and custom. There is a need for Kangri during the winter season," said Ahmad.

Kashmiris find Kangri easy to make and carry, unlike electrical heating devices. Kangri is also given to brides as marriage gifts. It costs between 80 to 1500 rupees on an average. (ANI)
