The President of India Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday celebrated his 77th birthday amid differently-abled children children who were specially invited for this occasion at his official residence Rastrapati Bhawan.
Top dignitaries including Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar went to Rashtrapati Bhavan to greet Mukherjee's first birthday after assuming Presidency on July 25.
The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj also greeted Pranab who was born on 11th December 1935 in a Bengali Brahmin family at Mirati village in Birbhum in West Bengal.
The invited children presented dances, songs, brail reading and singing of national anthem in sign language in order to mark his birthday.
According to a release from President's house, the day began with nearly 80 students giving a dance performance to the tunes of Vande Mataram sung by A R Rehman after which blind students rendered the National Anthem in sign language.
The President, who was accompanied by his wife Suvra Mukherjee, cut two cakes inscribed with 'Happy Birthday to you'. The cakes were distributed among the children.
President also distributed return gifts to the children.
Mukherjee also planted flower trees in Mughal Garden.
Pranab studied at the Suri Vidyasagar College at Suri in Birbhum district. He has double Master's degrees in Political Science and History and also a degree in law from the University of Calcutta.
Mukherjee served as a senior leader of the Indian National Congress during a career spanning over six decades. He served as ministers in various important ministries before becoming the President. Prior to this, he was the Union Finance Minister since 2009.
