New Delhi, Dec 10 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday rubbished Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati's accusation that the main opposition party was responsible for the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (SC/STs) Quota Bill not being passed in the Rajya Sabha, and charged the Congress-led UPA Government of failing to find a way out on the contentious issue of reservation in promotion in between the two main powerhouses in Uttar Pradesh.
BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the main opposition party fully supports the legitimate rights of those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes subject to constitutional parameters.
"The BJP would like to know from the Congress Party and the government that if on the vote on FDI in multi-brand retail it can get direct and indirect support both of the BSP and SP in both the houses, why can't it find a way out on the contentious issue of reservation in promotion in between the two parties. The country would like to know is there some shadow boxing going between the three (parties)," he added.
Mayawati, who earlier warned the government of 'a tough stand' if it does not push through new legislation that would reserve promotions in government jobs for SC/STs, lashed out at the BJP for not cooperating on the issue in the Rajya Sabha.
Mayawati, who has been demanding reservation in promotions, said the BJP's real face now stands exposed.
The BSP chief said that the BJP raised the Coalgate issue in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, saying this issue was more important and it should be discussed first.
"Now, when the Winter Session began, they diverted from their earlier stand and raised the issue of FDI," she added, while charging the BJP of asking the Samajwadi Party to create ruckus in the Rajya Sabha on the issue of Quota in promotion for Scheduled Castes and Tribes in government jobs so that the matter does not get much importance.
The Samajwadi Party today forced adjournment in the Rajya Sabha on the issue of Quota in promotion for Scheduled Castes and Tribes in government jobs.
The Rajya Sabha was scheduled to consider passage of the bill in this regard by moving the 117th Constitution Amendment Bill.
The bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in the Monsoon Session, but could not be taken up due to disruption on coal block issue.
The Bahujan Samaj Party has been demanding that the bill be passed, but the Samajwadi Party is opposing it. (ANI)
