Delhi Chief Minister. Sheila Dikshit has stated that, in all 150 night shelters are fully functional across Delhi to provide shelter to the homeless persons during winter season. Dikshit while taking stock of the functioning of night shelters, instructed the DUSIB to upgrade night shelters, wherever necessary, to ensure a comfortable stay in the shelters.
She underlined the need of creating proper awareness to ensure maximum utilisation of the capacity available in 84 temporary and 66 permanent shelters. This would go a long way in overcoming the hardship to homeless people spending night in the open.
Dikshit stated that out of 84 temporary night shelters 70 are in porta cabin structures and 14 are working in Basti Vikas Kendras. The DUSIB has ensured safety of the homeless persons using the facilities. Moreover all temporary night shelters in porta cabins have been upgraded to make them all weather and fire resistance.
The capacity of temporary night shelters is 4600 and present occupancy is around 2500. Further 66 permanent shelters with a capacity of around 9000 are functioning in the pucca buildings and are under the management and control of the DUSIB where presently around 3000 persons have been utilising the available facilities. Therefore, the city government is in a position to accommodate many more shelter less persons in the facilities already created.
Dikshit instructed that no entry fee be charged from the users since winter season has commenced. It may be recalled that an entry fee of `6 is charged per head, per use during seasons other than winter. Dikshit has instructed the mother NGO and NGOs to not charge any fee from the women, senior citizens and children below 16 yrs of age.
