CRPF helps rehabilitate surrendered Maoist in Lalgarh

Lalgarh (Jharkhand), Dec.9 (ANI): The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is helping a surrendered Maoist, Suman Maity alias Sauntha, to get back into mainstream society through the education route.

Maity is also being trained to become a trooper.

The commandant of the 50th Battalion of the CRPF, Shankarlal Sengupta, said: "The CRPF have also agreed to bear the cost of Maity's schooling, accommodation, food and other needs. They are providing training to make him eligible for a trooper's job, for which the minimum qualification is a school-leaving certificate. We talked with him at length and found that he is a very bright boy and somehow, he was misled. My consciousness impels me to cultivate this misled boy with a new domain and possibility and I have offered to sponsor his education and after release from the court of law, he is now with us."

Maity said that he was compelled by the incidents that he witnessed to take up arms and join the rebels.

"I was seething with anger that I am a just a student and I have done nothing, so why was I beaten up by the civil police? I had just asked them politely to turn off the torches, as the light was hurting my eyes. They still abused me and my relatives. I had also seen the behaviour of the police towards the public. After witnessing these atrocities on the public, I thought of joining the Maoists," he said.

Maity added: "After being brought by the CRPF following my arrest, I came closer to both the CRPF and police. I am not saying that all the members of the police force are right or wrong, but they have both positive and negative qualities. I did not have this thinking that time. I could have utilised my anger and done something positive to bring about a change, but I chose the wrong path and thought I was doing the right thing."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the Maoist rebellion as one of the gravest security threats to India. (ANI)
