Sports Ministry suspends Indian Boxing Federation and Archery association (Update: Boxing)

New Delhi , Fri, 07 Dec 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Dec 7 (ANI): Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jitendra Singh on Friday announced suspension of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) and Archery Association of India (AAI) with immediate effect.

He said the AAI has violated the age and tenure restrictions prescribed in the Sports Code. The President elect of the Archery Association of India has served for more than three consecutive terms in the past and is also above the age of 70 years.

The Minister said the decision has been taken as the election of the IABF held on September 23 were in violation of the procedure laid down in the Sports Code.

"The Government has to suspend the recognition of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation pending fresh elections. A notice will be sent to the IABF to confirm that they will hold fresh elections under independent supervision within a period of 15 days failing which the de-recognition will be made absolute," Singh said.

He said the International Boxing Federation has also suspended the IABF, pending enquiry into the elections held on September 23.

Singh said that boxers from India would not suffer as the Government of India will open a dialogue with the IABF to set in place interim measures so that the athletes are not affected.

The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) provisionally suspended the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) late on Thursday possible manipulation of the recent IABF's election two days after the suspension of Indian Olympic Association.

On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the IOA for allowing government interference in the election and said the body was no longer entitled to conduct the poll.

The reason behind the development has been cited as possible manipulation of the recent IABF elections held in September this year.

The IABF had elected BJP MLA Abhishek Singh Matoria as its president in September this year with Abhay Singh Chautala as chairman.

The body had made amendments to its constitution to accommodate Chautala, creating the post of chairman in a meeting held in Patiala.

The international body at a meeting at Lausanne, Switzerland, took the decision. (ANI)
