GMR case: Singapore court allows Maldives government to takeover airport

Washington , Thu, 06 Dec 2012 ANI

Washington, Dec 6 (ANI): Maldives has won a court battle for control of the island nation's main airport, and is set to take over operations from a consortium led by India based GMR Infrastructure.

A top official in the country said that the Singapore Court of Appeals has given us the right to take back the airport.

"The legal path for taking over Male airport has been cleared," the Wall Street Journal, quoted Masood Imad, the Maldives' presidential spokesman, as saying.

According to the Journal, Imad said Singapore's highest court overturned a stay on the takeover of operations from GMR and consortium partner Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.

The Maldives government had issued a notice on November 27, ordering the consortium to relinquish operations within seven days, as they considered the airport contract to be invalid.

GMR got a stay on the order from a Singapore court, but the Maldives government had said it would go ahead anyway.

Meanwhile, GMR spokeswoman Sowmya Shenoy said that the company has "no comments to make, and they want to see a copy of the judgement first." (ANI)
