Centre will give land in Mumbai for Ambedkar memorial: Anand Sharma

New Delhi, Dec 5 (ANI): Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Wednesday said the Central Government will give land in Mumbai to build a memorial for Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar.

In a statement in the Lok Sabha, Sharma said: "The Hon'ble members of this august House are aware that December 6 marks the death anniversary of one of India's tallest leaders Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar. The nation gratefully acknowledges his notable contribution in guiding the process of framing of our Constitution which laid the foundation of India's Parliamentary Democracy."

"The ashes of Babasaheb Ambedkar are interred at Chaitya Bhoomi situated in the vicinity of the land of Indu Mill, which is managed by the National Textile Corporation at Mumbai. For lakhs of his followers, this is a place of pilgrimage," he said.

"Respecting public sentiments and in response to the request of Government of Maharashtra, and taking note of the unanimous resolution passed by both Houses of Maharashtra Legislature, the Government of India has taken a view to make available this land for use to the Government of Maharashtra for the construction of a befitting memorial," he added.

He further said that the Government has initiated the process to give effect to this decision. "I will be shortly be moving the necessary Legislative proposal for Parliamentary approval. I seek the support and endorsement of the House," he added.

The announcement came a day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre and other leaders from the state met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the issue. (ANI)
