New Delhi, Nov 30 (ANI): Noted climate scientist and Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Dr. R.K. Pachauri, has been appointed the new chairperson of Guyana-based Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation.

Dr. Pachauri-who replaces the Center's former Chairperson, the late Angela Cropper-was bestowed with the honour at a reception held in the presence of President of Guyana, Donald Ramotar in Georgetown earlier this week.

According to the Iwokrama Act of 1996, the trustees of the board are appointed for a tenure of three years.

Highlighting the rich biodiversity at the facility, Dr. Pachauri said: "Iwokrama is a unique initiative to show the world how an important part of the global commons, a large and rich rainforest, can be protected and used by human society in a sustainable manner."

He also hailed the Center as a model for the world, while vowing to work towards developing Iwokrama through partnerships with relevant stakeholders and organisations.

Established in 1996 under an agreement between the government of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat, the facility is mandated to manage the Iwokrama reserve that comprises nearly 3,71,000 hectares of rainforest area.

The core programmes carried out at the Center include sustainable management of the tropical rain forest; conservation and utilisation of biodiversity and forestry research.

The uniqueness of the Iwokrama Center-also called the 'green heart of Guyana'-lies in its efforts towards integrating efficient conservation processes, environmental balance and economic management to create a sustainable forest.

Researchers at the facility seek to reverse the trend of rainforest destruction through an innovative blend of technology, ancient culture, and traditional knowledge. Through extensive studies, the Center also aims to strengthen and promote forest conservation through sustainable means to tackle climate change. (ANI)
