Sudanese boy gets a new life at Delhi hospital

New Delhi, Nov 29 (IANS) A 12?year?old Sudanese boy got a new lease of life following a combined liver and kidney transplant with the organs donated by his two sisters at a hospital here, doctors said Thursday.

Mukhtar Ahmed Ali Gadkarim was suffering from kidney failure due to a rare disorder known as primary hyperoxaluria. While one of the sisters gave him a kidney, the other gave a part of the liver.

The boy, who was admitted in the Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Nov 6, was operated upon after a week of observation. He was discharged Thursday.

"In hyperoxaluria, while there is no liver failure, unless the liver is replaced to provide the deficient enzyme, the kidney transplant will fail as the kidney will get damaged by the oxalates," said Anupam Sibal, senior paediatric gastroenterologist.

"The treatment of choice for primary hyperoxaluria in case of kidney failure is a combined liver and kidney transplant," said Sandeep Guleria, senior kidney transplant surgeon.

"This is one of the most challenging transplants in medical science as it requires extensive dialysis pre?operatively and then post?operatively."

Indraprastha Apollo till date has done more than 9,000 kidney transplants and more than 1,150 liver transplants and five combined liver and kidney transplants, said the statement issued by the hospital.
