Migratory birds flock to Chandigarh's Sukhna Lake

Chandigarh, Fri, 23 Nov 2012 ANI

Chandigarh, Nov.23 (ANI): Its good news for ornithologists and nature lovers as migratory birds have arrived at Chandigarh's Sukhna Lake.

Winter in India sees many species of birds migrate from north and central Asia and other, colder parts of the world, as the birds breed and live in the more temperate climate of the Indian subcontinent.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, Santosh Kumar, Director, Conservator of Forests, said that this year more than 3000 birds have visited the lake and that arrangements were made to ensure that people have a complete birding experience.

"Actually every year, in this impressive wetland of the Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, migratory birds from Siberia, Tibet etc cross the Himalayas and come here. This year as well about 3500 birds have come. This year we have made special arrangements by installing telescopes, boards providing books for visitors. This would help the people know more about these migratory birds," said Kumar.

The water body had large number of winged guests like the Common Coot, Ruddy Shelduck, and Indian Cormorans swimming, feeding and sunning them.

In light of rapidly declining habitats and general administrative indifference, conservationists are attaching a lot of importance to manmade sanctuaries and wetlands.

The Sukhna Lake was created in the year 1958 with an average depth of 18 feet.

But of late, the depth has reduced to more or less than two feet at most of its places. Even the size of the lake that was nearly three-square kilometres has diminished to one third because of heavy silt and weed deposition. (ANI)
