Family immerses ashes of Bal Thackeray in Mumbai

Mumbai, Fri, 23 Nov 2012 ANI

Mumbai, Nov.23 (ANI): The ashes of Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray were immersed at sea off Mumbai on Friday by his son Uddhav Thackeray and close family members.

Thackeray's nephew and chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray also attended the immersion ceremony.

Thackeray expired on November 17 and was cremated with full state honours at Shivaji Maidan on November 18.

A cartoonist who turned to politics in 1966, he became an astute practitioner of "hate-politics", wherein he stoked the domestic "Maharashtrian" identity.

His rise to power in Mumbai, a diverse city of around 20 million people, underscored the strong pull of religion in modern India, a constitutionally secular country prone to flashpoints between a slew of beliefs and traditions.

Thackeray gained notoriety for his acerbic language and the Shiv Sena's campaign against Mumbai's immigrant population, whom he accused of taking jobs away from bona-fide residents of Maharashtra. (ANI)
