Patna, Nov.20 (ANI): Utter chaos prevailed in hospitals of Patna, a day after a stampede claimed at least 17 lives, including children during the Chhath Festival.
The stampede was triggered by the collapse of a makeshift bamboo bridge built along the banks of the river on Monday.
Victims and dozens of injured persons were rushed to the nearby government- run Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) as television channels ran reports of announcement of probe and compensation by the chief minister.
According to Vishesh, a local resident, the chaos at the government hospital led many injured people to go to other hospitals in the city for treatment.
"There are a lot of people who are injured and many have died as well. Many injured have gone to other hospitals. Nothing is systematic over here and there is utter chaos," he said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav pulled up the state l government for not making proper arrangements ahead of the festival. He also stopped the festivities taking place at his residence in New Delhi.
He said: "None of the political parties and representatives of the people made arrangements in Patna city to dispose off garbage and there are no provisions for security as well. There is complete mis-governance. The locals have raised concern about these problems. But, the Chief Minister was in Pakistan."
Yadav expressed grief over the incident and demanded the incumbent state government to step down and claim responsibility for the tragedy.
"The reports have confirmed that 17 people, including women and children have died. There was a stampede, in which several other people have also suffered. The Chief Minister of the state, Nitish Kumar should take up the moral responsibility that he neglected the arrangements for the Chhath puja and he should quit from his position," he said.
Some eyewitnesses and bereaved relatives have blamed Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for poor arrangement during religious festivals.
The three-day long Chhath Festival begins with thousands of devotees observing fast and swarming to the banks of river Ganges to offer religious prayers.
Chhath Puja is considered to be the most auspicious festival for the people of Bihar and in parts of neighbouring states of Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.
It is also popular in big cities like Kolkata, Pune and Mumbai where there are large number of people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Stampedes are relatively common in India as thousands of people gather to pray during festivals. (ANI)
