Geelani calls for Kashmir shutdown over court verdict against Muslim League chairman

Srinagar, Mon, 19 Nov 2012 ANI

Srinagar, Nov.19 (ANI): Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani called for a shutdown here on Monday to protest over the Jammu and Kashmir High Court's verdict of awarding life imprisonment to the Chairman of the Muslim League, Mohammad Qasim Faktoo.

The verdict was delivered on November 16 after the high court had dismissed Faktoo's petition for relief and immediate release in connection with the murder case of human rights activist H N Wanchoo.

Faktoo had completed 20 years in jail in May this year.

All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices remained closed and public transport remained off the roads.

The authorities deployed police and paramilitary forces at vital places across the city to prevent untoward incidents.

Mohammad Abaaz Khan, a resident, said: "Yesterday, we had to go to Jammu, but when we came here, we got to now that Geelani has called for a strike in protest against the Jammu and Kashmir High Court judgment in the Mohammad Qasim Faktoo case. The strike has left us stranded." (ANI)
