Kochi, Nov. 17 (ANI): Expressing resentment over the death of Indian national Savita Halappanavar after doctors denied her an abortion, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi on Saturday urged the Government of Ireland to make some amendments to the abortion law without hurting the sentiments of the Catholic faith.
Asserting that the Government of India is concerned on this matter, Ravi said 'it seems that the doctors, who are expected to be medical ethics, have shown no concern to the life of Savita.
"The Irish Government has declared that they will go for an inquiry.... And it is my request that the Government of Ireland should show some kind of political determination and strength to heed to the request of the people, Human Rights Commission and others and make some amendments to the abortion law without hurting the sentiments of the Catholic faith," he added.
External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid earlier today offered his condolences to Savita's family, and said that the Irish Government is probing the matter.
Khurshid said the death of Halappanavar, a dentist who was denied an abortion in Ireland due to the country's controversial abortion laws, is a very sad incident.
"The matter should be investigated and is being done. I express my full condolences to the family and pray to god to give them courage. I have full confidence that the Ireland Government will take appropriate action in this matter. We are in touch with them and will do whatever possible," he added.
Khurshid earlier on Friday said India's envoy to Ireland would formally raise New Delhi' concerns over the death of Savita.
Halappanavar, a dentist, was reportedly denied a potentially lifesaving abortion even while she was having a miscarriage.
The 31-year-old Indian woman died in Ireland from blood poisoning after doctors allegedly refused to perform an abortion on grounds that as a Catholic-dominant country, it forbids such an act. (ANI)
