Temple elephants to go to rejuvenation camp

Chennai, Nov 17 (IANS) Happy days are back for elephants belonging to temples and 'mutts' in Tamil Nadu with the state government reviving the special rejuvenation camps for the pachyderms.

The 48?day rejuvenation camps for elephants from temples and mutts will be held in two batches this year, said a statement Saturday.

In the first batch, 35 elephants belonging to 33 temples and 10 elephants from five mutts will go for a 48?day rejuvenation camp near Coimbatore from Nov 26.

In the second batch, 37 elephants will go for the camp in Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Nilgiri district, around 570 km from here, from Dec 14.

At the camp, the elephants will be given special diet and their health and mental condition will be checked and monitored.

The camp for elephants was introduced in the state in 2003 by the then AIADMK government headed by Jayalalithaa to provide the animals respite from daily duties.
