Imphal, Nov.16 (ANI): Scores of farmers participated in a fishing festival in Imphal recently to learn new ways to increase production of fish in Manipur.

Over 190 competitors registered themselves for the festival, which also attracted several buyers and sellers of indigenous fish.

The venue, known as Kakching Lake, has several varieties of fish. The first angling competition was held last year at the same lake on the eve of Ningol Chakouba, a prominent festival of the state.

M. Sunder Singh, a participant cultivator, said such events benefit both farmers and cultivators.

"I have come here as a cultivator, as a farmer and I am happy to be here at this event in Manipur. It is beneficial for both the farmers and the public," he said.

Ningol Chakouba is a Meitei festival held on every 2nd Hiyangei as per the Manipuri calendar, which fell on November 15 this year.

As per the tradition, parents and brothers invite their daughters and sisters for a special meal. The daughters wear the best attire, since it is a special day for them.

Kakching Somorjit, one of the organizers, said such events serve as a platform to promote fishing activities, apart from entertaining the crowd.

"We are organizing this kind of festival, with a view to promote such activities and it is also entertaining for the crowd. I think this is the second time we are organizing such a festival, last year we had the same angling festival," he said.

The angling competition is an important event in the history of Manipur.

The event was organized to promote peace, harmony and brotherhood among various sections of societies in the state.

A cash reward of rupees 3000, 2000 and 1000 were awarded to winners, runners up and second runners up respectively. (ANI)
