International percussion artists in Kolkata

Kolkata, Nov 15 (IANS) Three of the best international percussionists are set to jam in the city to celebrate drums and rhythms with the "Mighty Trio on Drums" concert at the picturesque Rabindra Sarobar here Dec 1.

The live open air event will see American drummer and percussionist Greg Ellis, English percussionist and recording artist Pete Lockett and Indian tabla player and percussionist Bickram Ghosh.

"The drum or the beat is the closest to our life because life begins with a heartbeat, it begins with a pulse. Therefore, rhythms and beats are important in our life. This is what we will celebrate," Ghosh told the media Thursday.

As many as 100 drums of different types, including acoustic and electric, will be accompanying the trio at the concert organised by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) in partnership with the Calcutta Classical Guitar Society (CCGS).

The line up will also include a performance by renowned American contemporary danseuse Doris Martel.

"The aim is to bring the best of the three continents. This is one of the most important music festival in Kolkata in the last 25 years," said Vivek Bharadwaj, CEO, KMDA.

"Most of the big concerts in India give Kolkata a slip for some reason or the other. But this one we are not going to miss. We wanted bring two of the best percussion artists of the world and give the city a taste of what a big show can be and also to give the venue a boost," said Bickram Ghosh.

Greg Ellis, associated with Hollywood hits like The Matrix trilogy, and Pete Lockett, known as the 'Bond' rhythm man for his contribution to the James Bond movie franchise, will also conduct workshops in the city prior to the concert for drumming enthusiasts.
