New Delhi, Nov. 12 (ANI): Tibetans living in India, staged a protested outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi on Monday against alleged repressive policies of the China to draw global attention to their plight at a time of change at the top in Beijing.
The protesters, with faces painted in the red and yellow colours of Tibetan flag, charged towards the Chinese embassy shouting slogans of 'free Tibet'. After a brief tussle with police, the protesters were controlled and detained.
The protesters said the rising number of self-immolations by Buddhist monks and nuns inside Tibet was a cause of serious concern and that the world should put pressure on the Chinese government to end its repressive policies in their homeland.
"Till now 70 people self immolated and 59 out them have died on spot. We need Chinese government immediately removed. Dalai Lama should go into Tibet, without any condition, we need freedom," said a protester.
China has branded the self-immolators 'terrorists' and 'criminals' and accuses exiled Tibetans and the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, of inciting them which he denies.
China has barred foreign journalists from Tibet and prevented many others from traveling to surrounding Tibetan regions and has said that it will not allow foreign observers into Tibet to probe human rights abuses, dismissing growing international pressure for an independent investigation in the troubled mountainous region.
Beijing considers Nobel peace laureate the Dalai Lama a separatist. The Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, says he merely seeks greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland. (ANI)
